Terrace swimming pool guide
An above-ground pool is the simplest way to get a swimming pool on a terrace: no digging, no civil work, and it can come down again. The one thing to get right is weight. This guide shows how much each Bestway pool weighs when full, how much space it needs, and what to check before you order.
How heavy is a pool full of water?
Water weighs about 1,000 kg per cubic metre — one litre is about one kilogram. So what matters for a roof is the depth of water: every metre of depth puts about 1,000 kg on each square metre the pool stands on.
- About 0.9 m of water ≈ 900 kg per m²
- About 1.1 m of water ≈ 1,100 kg per m²
- About 1.2 m of water ≈ 1,200 kg per m²
That is before people, the frame and the pump. Have a structural engineer check your roof before you order. They can tell you how much load it was built for and where the beams and columns are.

Pools that suit terraces best
The First Pool (Bestway 56442) holds about 0.9 m of water and is 2.01 m wide. The 30-inch round pools, The Splash Set (Bestway 56408) and The Garden One (Bestway 56416), hold only about 0.7 m, so they put the lightest load on a roof. The Terrace One (Bestway 56457) is only 2.01 m wide, so it runs along a terrace or fits in a corner. For a mid-size terrace, The Family One (16 ft × 8 ft) covers 11.9 m².
Before you order: a checklist
- Structure. A structural engineer has confirmed the roof can carry the load, and where the pool should stand.
- Flat, level floor. The pool must stand on level ground with no stones or sharp edges under the liner.
- Space. The pool’s footprint plus about 1 m all round to walk, climb in and reach the pump.
- Waterproofing and drainage. The terrace should be watertight, with a clear path for water when you drain or splash.
- Power. The filter pump needs a safe outdoor power point nearby.
- Water. Filling takes time and depends on the pool size and your water supply.
